The self-timing locking nut lets you index the ports to the rifle by hand without shims, crush washers or a gunsmith, and the tunable top ports let you trim muzzle rise to your load. Normally no. The self-timing nut lets you rotate the brake to vertical and lock it in place by hand on a correctly threaded muzzle. A gunsmith is still required if your barrel needs threading.
